“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
An African Proverb
The proverb above are words to coach by if you are Savannah Zimmerman. She understands all too well that true strength is achieved through a steady and shared path – no shortcuts, no solitary thought – just TEAM moving in one direction with a common goal. That is her program-map for building a rock-solid foundation for the girls’ lacrosse program. A foundation able to withstand the throes of any eroding element, and she begins setting that foundation now.
KEYS TO THE NEW CAR Mullen Announces New Flag Football Coach
New things - Aren’t they awesome! For instance, getting that brand new car with its reflective paint and new car smell, or the maintenance-free security of a brand-spanking new house with fresh paint on the walls and perfect carpet and hardwood, or how about the look of a new suit or evening gown and the confidence boost it gives its wearer as everyone sneaks a peak at what real style looks like. We are drawn to the anticipation of newness. The mystery of what lies in wait, the learning curve of mastering the unknown, the excitement of the uniqueness of being one of the first to parade the new look are all things that draw us to want the latest thing. It is human nature or, perhaps, today’s conditioned culture, not sure which. Regardless, new is nice. In that light, Mullen Athletics has something new, and it is ecstatic to show it off. A new athletic program is unveiling its inaugural season this fall, and the expected excitement with the novelty of the program is right up there with all new things. Mullen will field its first girls’ flag football team this fall as a charter member of CHSAA’s newest sanctioned sport. With that addition comes inherent needs, and the first priority is naming the right coach to get this new program thriving and banner-worthy.
The gridiron is no longer just for boys on high school fields across Colorado. As of April 23rd, at the most recent CHSAA Legislative Council, state membership voted to approve girls’ flag football as a CHSAA-sanctioned sport starting in the fall of 2024, and Mullen is all in. Mullen is adding a 27th sport giving young ladies another option to choose from during the fall season.
There is no substitution for competition. Constant competition hardens and sharpens athletes. It crossfits athletes and enhances gross-body coordination and enhanced near vision not to mention increases stamina and brings about greater exercise intensity. Competition just makes you better. Mullen’s newly named head girls’ swim coach is exactly that… a competitor. Jenn (Belz) Marx, a 2014 Mullen grad, has always competed. If she was not swimming for records, she was helping win lacrosse games or crewing her boat to maximum speeds. In short, she Competed.
The introduction is overdue, but for the past 50+ days, Ethan Saloom has been pushing our kids to get better. Ethan was hired as an assistant Sports Performance coach, and he brings a world of ‘smarts’ with him. Once destined to become a mechanical engineer, it just didn’t feel right, so the path was changed. His love of sports was too strong, and that field of endeavor in some capacity was calling. He was sure his degree in exercise science would lead him to physical therapy, but COVID created an alternate path. The pandemic slowed everything and everyone down for a time, and it allowed Ethan to really eyeball his future and find an answer to the question of what he was going to do with his degree. He decided on building something – Athletes.
